Metabolic Health and Medical Weight Loss in Houston
You're eating well, moving more, and the scale still won't budge. That isn't a willpower problem. Blood sugar, insulin, hormones, sleep, and stress all shape how your body stores and burns energy. At Minnow Wellness, a women's functional medicine clinic in Houston, Texas, we measure what's actually happening in your metabolism and build a plan that works with your body instead of against it.
Why can't I lose weight even though I'm doing everything right?
When weight won't move despite real effort, the cause is often metabolic. Insulin resistance makes your body more likely to store fat, especially around your middle. Low muscle mass slows how many calories you burn at rest. And shifts in estrogen, cortisol, and thyroid hormones can all change where and how your body holds weight, especially in your late 30s and 40s.
What are the signs of metabolic dysfunction?
Weight gain around the middle that doesn't respond to diet or exercise
Energy crashes, shakiness, or intense cravings a few hours after eating
Feeling hungry soon after meals
Brain fog or sleepiness after eating
Rising blood sugar, A1c, or triglycerides on your labs
PCOS, irregular cycles, or skin tags

How do you test metabolic health?
We measure instead of guessing. Depending on your goals, your evaluation may include:
Comprehensive blood panel. Fasting glucose, insulin, A1c, lipids, thyroid, and sex hormones, so we can see insulin resistance and hormone patterns that a basic panel misses.
DEXA body composition scan. Shows your body fat, visceral fat, lean muscle, and bone density, so progress is measured by more than the scale.
Resting metabolic rate test. Measures how many calories your body actually burns at rest, so your nutrition targets are built on your numbers, not an online calculator.
Continuous glucose monitor. When useful, a few weeks of real-time glucose data shows exactly how your body responds to meals, sleep, and stress.
What is the Metabolic Reset?
The Metabolic Reset is Minnow's 90-day program for insulin resistance, weight resistance, and metabolic changes in perimenopause. It runs in three 30-day phases:
Stabilize. Steady your blood sugar, sleep, and stress response so your body stops fighting you.
Build. Add strength training to protect and build muscle, layer in targeted supplements, and start medication if it's right for you.
Optimize and sustain. Fine-tune your plan, retest, and set you up to maintain your results long term.
Your nutrition targets come from your own resting metabolic rate, with protein at every meal. We retest at 3 months to measure what changed.
Is medical weight loss right for me?
Your provider will review your health history, labs, and goals before recommending medication. GLP-1 medications aren't right for everyone, including women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive, or who have a personal or family history of certain thyroid cancers or a history of pancreatitis.
Do you offer semaglutide or tirzepatide in Houston?
Yes. When it's appropriate for you, Minnow providers can prescribe compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide, which are GLP-1 medications that reduce appetite and improve how your body handles blood sugar. Your medication is prepared by our compounding pharmacy partner, EVEXIAS, and dosed for you by your provider.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. Your provider will talk through what that means, the benefits and side effects, and whether medication is the right step for you.
We see these medications as one tool inside a complete plan, not a shortcut. Women do best, and keep their results, when medication is paired with enough protein, strength training to protect muscle, and support for sleep, stress, gut health, and hormones. That foundation is what helps you keep the weight off if you ever taper off medication.
